"the teacher"

Today I went to my middle school with my best friend to visit old teachers.
I am always so excited to venture through those doors and see people that taught me for 4 years. Almost everyone knows who I am which is nice--even teachers I never had.
I went with my best friend and we had a nice time. There is one teacher in particular that we went to see and she is great.
This teacher is in my top 5 teachers I have ever had--closer to the top than the bottom. She is in the top 5 for my friend as well.
Its not that her class was insanely fun or incredibly interesting, its her as a person.
"The teacher"(as I will now call her) is caring, kind, interested and a variety of other things.
No matter how many people call me by my "nickname" (its not really a nickname, more a shorter version of my name), she always uses my full name and always exclaims "My Ayvie!" when she sees me.

We talked about school, life, my friends, her life, etc. Everything. She always listens intently and asks questions because she genuinely cares.

My best friend said today that when hes 21, he wants to invite her out to drinks because he thinks it would be a great time. I had to agree, because it probably would. I did ask him though how he would go about asking..he didnt know yet.

I feel lucky to have a former teacher that I can talk to not as a student, but as a person. To me, that means everything. I cant imagine going to a big school where teachers dont care about anything but your school life. My middle school and high school have some of the nicest teachers and greatest people I have ever met.

Teachers like this one are the people that used to influence me to become an educator. A person that can love teaching but be there if needed, someone to talk to and someone to go back to after school. I used to want to be that teacher that was in the top 5 on peoples lists.

Sometimes I wonder how many people want to go back to their middle/high school and talk to teachers. Who get excited about it and relish in the time they get to have there. I am glad to have that and I can only wish the same for others.

  1. That's great that you go back and see your teachers! My mom is a teacher, and she loves when kids come back to see her. A teacher from my high school died over the weekend. He taught at our school for 38 years! He was the boys gym teacher and the driver's ed instructor. He was actually licensed to give us our driving tests, so everyone from my high school got their license from him. Thousands and thousands of kids. He is so, so missed already. I hope the teachers realize the positive impact they're having on us!
