Last year, my friend told me of her idea to open an ice cream shop in California. I instantly jumped on the bandwagon and asked to be her partner—she said yes.
Now, we are partners in crime, aspiring to open an award winning, million dollar producing, ice cream establishment across the country and we aren’t going to let anything get in our way.
The problem seems to be, that the only thing that could get in the way are people we express our idea to.
Our mothers, friends, extended families all seem to think that our idea isn’t a good one. That it will never happen and that we should dismiss the thoughts coming from our 5-year-old like brains.
All I can think of when someone says something to me about how infantile it is, is, what if Ben and Jerry didn’t follow their dream? What is the person that developed Cold Stone and Dairy Queen didn’t open their businesses? And what about all the single ice cream places that aren’t chains across the country—they followed their dream too.
Sometimes its hard not to let the opinions of others influence your thoughts because they are so overpowering. What about other peoples opinions makes it seem like your own aren’t worth anything?
Opinions are something so difficult because everyone has them and expresses them. Many times, people want your true opinions and many times people dont. Sometimes its hard to know what to say and when.
The opinions of others, no matter how strong, really have no pull on a person in the end. Although it may be hard to realize, I believe that no one can solely influence another person to do something.
I guess the point is, that when you have a dream, you need to go for it. Nothing and no one should get in the way of your biggest dreams and make you unhappy.
