While some of the performances at Sundays MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) were nothing but spectacular, others fell a bit short for one of the most hyped-up award shows of the year.
Hosted by E! comedian Chelsea Handler, the 2010 VMAs went off without a bang. Usually funny Handler made sure to recognize that she was the first woman to host the show in 16 years and tried to get the audience going. Handler addressed topics like the Taylor Swift/Kanye West surprise at the 2009 awards: “It’s time to address the big black elephant in the room...Where’s Kanye?” and met with a un-jailed Lindsay Lohan in the hallway before getting on the stage. Handler tried getting into a hot tub with the Jersey Shore cast and talking with Ke$ha but the audiences were only looking towards the performances relating to last years drama.
Taylor Swift and Kanye West returned to the stage separately this year after 2009’s interruption incident and performed new songs. While Swifts unnamed song seemed to directly relate to West, speculation is that West’s song “Runaway” wasn’t directed to her.
While she wasn’t supposed to show, Rihanna took to the stage with Eminem for the first performance of the night and won over the audience with their hit “Love the Way You Lie”. Eminem’s two awards were accepted by presenters as he jetted out immediately after performing.
Other big names from Justin Bieber, who won Best New Artist, to Usher, Drake and Mary J. Blige to Hayley Williams with B.O.B. and Bruno Mars performed and new-comer Florence and the Machine who received an award for Best Art Director belted out “Dog Days Are Over” taking the crowd into her earthy performance.
Television and music personalities including “Modern Family”s Sofia Vergara and other presenters from “True Blood”, Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel ruled the show. Presenter Katy Perry commemorated the year anniversary of meeting fiancé Russell Brand at last years awards and an unexpected Cher who was wearing close to nothing stated that “so far I’m the oldest chick with the biggest hair and littlest costume”.
Lady Gaga, who changed into multiple unique outfits throughout the almost two and a half hour show, took home the most awards receiving eight awards from her 13 nominations. As she accepted her Best Female Video moon-man for “Bad Romance”, Gaga told through soft tears that “tonight little monsters, we’re the cool kids at the party”. At the end of the night, Gaga, clad in a dress made out of raw meat, also accepted a statue from Cher for Video of the Year (also for “Bad Romance”) which is the most prestigious award of the night. Surprising devoted fans, Gaga revealed the title of her new album “Born This Way” and gave an impromptu performance of a song.
Despite obvious efforts to make this show go off without a hitch, while 2009’s VMAs were more than memorable, the 27th show left something to be desired.
