rollerskater

Yesterday, I went skating. No, I did not go ice skating nor did I go roller blading. I went roller skating. That means good old-fashioned four wheels fastened onto a boot with a plate and bearings. Many people ask me about this type of skating. They tell me they have never done it before, how it must be hard to be on four wheels positioned like a square. I tell them its easier than roller blading and they dont believe me.
I guess for me, its just not hard because I used to be a roller skater.
What exactly does that mean? you may ask. Well, let me explain. I was a member of an artistic roller skating club.
I was a member of this club for about 4 years (I think..it may be 3..hmm). My closet was cluttered with nude colored tights and multi colored skating costumes.I wore the turquoise club skating dress at every practice, skated at least two times a week and competed at official roller skating competitions. I was a member of the Precision Team and we won a few gold medals for our routine. I used to be somewhat scared to do jumps and free style was my least favorite part of skating but I did what I could. I enjoyed figures and dance for the most part. All in the club became very close and we loved morning free skates when we could skate around, do whips around the rink and dance to songs like the YMCA and others with moves. We even created our own move that we pulled out during these skates. Its name was the "Shit Hop" but I am not sure why we named it that.

Yesterday was the 2nd time I had been skating since leaving the club and it was fun. Although I wasnt doing the dances, figures and jumps that I was used to, the rush of skating fast around the rink was present. I wish I could still do jumps, but I am afraid. I cant imagine leaping into the air after years of not doing that.  I wish there were more roller skating rinks in my area and that the ones around had clubs. I would love to get back out into the rink and be a member of a club again.

and for your viewing enjoyment..a precision team. They are better than we were (they should be..they are at nationals in this video) but it gives you the idea of a roller precision team. We could do most of the things they are doing in this video because some are required of a team.

(and i might suggest turning down your volume a little bit--there is screaming)

  1. That's so neat! It must take so much coordination...I know I don't have nearly enough to be able to do that! Sounds like you had fun though!
