A Small Rant on Photography

When I received my Nikon and a photography class for my birthday a few weeks ago, I was excited to start learning more about photography.

During the holidays, it was easy to find things to photograph. I have a few hundred captures of Christmas, my cousins birthday, family dinners and the Christmas tree.

Now that the holiday's are over, I am finding myself in a bit of a rut. I want to take pictures of food, of flowers of the 2 feet of snow but I feel that I can't. As of right now, I don't know how to change all the settings to make the lighting look better or the shutter move faster and I barely even know what those things exactly mean.

It's not that I thought photography would be easy--I know that it is NOT and that it's something that takes a ton of practice and an eye but I did think that it wouldn't be crazy difficult to find inspiration and to make things straight.

If i'm not going for an "artsy" angle, I look through the viewfinder to make the picture straight. Lately, I am seeing things straight in the viewfinder but when they come out, they appear a bit crooked. It may just be me not liking the photograph or the way I am doing it.

I look at all the pictures on some of my favorite blogs and feel envious that they can take such great straight out of camera shots and I can't.

Hopefully my photography class will teach me how to change these things or at least work on them. Hopefully one day I'll feel comfortable making my own photo blog or be able to do my own photoshoot and consider myself a photographer.

Luckily, my class will also teach me about Photoshop and Lightroom so i'll be able to edit things and make the light better and eyes brighter--minor changes that enhance a photo so that even if it doesn't come out just as I wanted it, a few minutes of work can make it look like I desired.

(I can't wait to save some money so I can purchase my own copy of Photoshop or Lightroom without worrying about spending so much money on software :)    )

Thanks for listening to my rant

Question: any tips for making things straighter besides just knowing how its going to look?

  1. Hi : ) I am just visiting via your comment on Miz Booshay's interview today : ) I wanted to say hi to some other photographers. I just finished your post about your name on twitter. It is weird that most of us start out anonymously isn't it? I mean, I wonder why we don't just share our real names right away. I have started sharing mine and it feels better. Realer : ) just like you were saying.

It will take you a while to get used to your camera. Practice every day. Practice on the 2 feet of snow and the cat food bowl. Practice on the clouds and on strangers. It gets better the more you shoot. I love that you are taking a class. That will be very helpful! : )

Nice to meet you today : )
